RANI NO HAJIRO

No visit to Ahmedabad is complete without experiencing the crazy chaos of Manek Chowk............
This is the city's biggest market for jewellery, foodstuff, textiles, wedding articles, fruits and vegetables. Located in the centre of the city, this bustling open square showcases the best of the city's bazaars and is a photographer's delight.
The market has many moods – in the mornings the vegetable markets are active, during the day time, it is dominated by the jewellery shops, and in the evenings, the food stalls start to emerge, serving hot, scrumptious snacks to hungry shoppers..............

The nearby Rani no Hajiro is a 'ladies' market, with costume jewellery, textiles, and other knick-knacks and bargains.............

                                       RAVIVARI

‘Ravivari’, the informal market is held under Ellis Bridge on Sundays and continues to take place even as the market is being redeveloped to provide better facilities for the vendors and visitors.
The market is designed as a multi-purpose space, with ‘Ravivari’ on Sundays and seasonal markets and other kinds of organized vending facilities on a daily basis.

Every Sunday afternoon, this riverfront bazaar changes from it’s usual sedate Sunday morning-self into a crowded thorough-fare of merchants and stalls who are selling all that you can imagine. And with that arrive the many people – young and old – who come to enjoy the sights and sounds of what’s going on.

On this particular Sunday I noticed a little bit of everything. Antique furniture, second-hand clothing, paintings, records, gramophones, war paraphernalia and vintage fashion magazines. The antique, the odd and the downright obscure. All available for a price.

LAL DARWAJA

Lal Darwaja is the most popular shopping hub of the city. It is the busiest shopping area in the city. You can buy sarees, gents garments, children garments, shoes, chaniya choli, wallets, old books, belt and endless things. Lal Darwaja is my favourite shopping area in Ahmedabad. They generally quote higher price for every item and if you are aware about price of particular item then you must bargain with the hawker/shop owner. Most of the time, item price is quoted higher than its original price. I have also experienced that sometime they quote more than 5x higher price than its original product price............... So, it is advisable to keep bargaining till hawker lowers the price. It will be best shopping experience at Lal Darwaja for you.............

SABARMATI ASHRAM

Sabarmati Ashram (also known as Gandhi Ashram, Harijan Ashram, or Satyagraha Ashram) is located in the Sabarmati suburb of Ahmedabad, Gujarat, adjoining the Ashram road, on the banks of the River Sabarmati, four miles from the town hall. This was one of the residences of Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, generally called Mahatma Gandhi, who lived there for about twelve years along with his wife, Kasturba Gandhi.
It was from his base here that Gandhi led the Dandi march also known as the Salt Satyagraha on 12 March 1930. In recognition of the significant influence that this march had on the Indian Independence Movement  the Indian government has established the ashram as a national monument.

This remarkably elegant temple created out of white marble has been sacred to many Jain families, generation after generation. It was built in 1848 A.D. at an estimated cost of 10 lakh rupees by a rich merchant Sheth Hutheesing as a dedication to the 15th Jain tirthankar, Shri Dharmanatha. Traditional artisans working in stone belonged to the Sonpura & Salat communities. The Salat community constructed masterpieces of architecture ranging from forts, palaces to temples. The work of the Hutheesing Jain temple is attributed to Premchand Salat. One scholar has remarked, "Each part goes on increasing in dignity as we approach the sanctuary. Whether looked at from its courts or from the outside, it possesses variety without confusion and an appropriateness of every part to the purpose for which it was intended"

Located outside the Delhi Gate, the temple is spread over a sprawling courtyard, a mandapa surmounted by a large ridged dome, which is supported by 12 ornate pillars. The small garbhagruh (main shrine) on the east end reaches up into three stunningly carved spires and encircled by 52 small shrines dedicated to the various Tirthankars. There are large protuding porches with magnificently decorated columns and figural brackets on three outer sides. Also a recently built 78 ft Mahavir stambha (tower) fashioned after the renowned tower at Chittor in Rajasthan, flanks the outer courtyard by the front entrance. Some of the motifs used in the design reminds one of the Sultanate minarets of the Mughal period
